Discover the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu: the historical jewel of Peru

Lost in the middle of the Peruvian Andes stands the incredible Inca city Machu Picchu. This historic sanctuary bears witness to the past greatness of the Inca Empire. Its location on a mountain slope accompanied by an exceptional fauna and flora gives the place a magical dimension. Thus, breathtaking panoramas and a journey back in time long before the arrival of the Spanish settlers are on the program.

The Machu Picchu Sanctuary is located east of the Andes Mountains at the edge of the Amazon rainforest in southern Peru . Machu Picchu is located 2438 m above sea level below the mountain of Huayna Picchu. The sanctuary is made up of 172 ancient constructions, extending over 32,592 hectares.

An incredibly rich site

Between the Andes mountains and the Amazon basin, the geographical panorama of the place is simply magnificent. And this unprecedented and unique magical atmosphere allows you to enjoy the breathtaking view of the South American relief. The construction of Machu Picchu adds an exceptional touch of history to this atmosphere. Indeed, it represents the climax of the Inca Empire in the 15th century by its architecture, its land use and its details. In fact, Machu Picchu forms a trace of the heritage, culture and power deposited here by the Incas that has crossed the centuries. Unfortunately, this place founded in the 15th century was abandoned a century later because of the fall of the Inca Empire and the South American colonization by the Spaniards.

All about Machu Picchu

The sanctuary includes religious, agricultural, ceremonial and scientific (astronomical) buildings. Thus, this brings to 172 the number of buildings found there. The city is separated into two parts by a large square: on one side the agricultural land, on the other the residences and buildings mentioned above. However, archaeologists and scientists claim that the place still retains many secrets and mysteries. For example, one can wonder the concrete role of this place in the study of the stars by the Incas, but also how wild plant species became acclimatized at this altitude.

The remaining buildings bear witness to a detailed and massive architecture closely linked to the environment of which they are a part. Nowadays, we also note that certain previously human developments have made it possible to modify the geographical character of the place. Thus, the presence of facilities for watercourses or networks of roads and trails favor the presence of endemic species. These same species, which form a very rare biodiversity in the region, extending from the bottom of the valley to the top of Machu Picchu.
